We’ve been thinking about creating with clay for quite some time, but became fully inspired after visiting an exhibition at Kumeu Arts Centre where these clay heads were exhibited. They have been created by Jago Neal, manager of the Arts Centre, with quite a story behind them.
During the 2020 lockdown, Jago began to make these heads. He set himself the challenge of making one a day. As the days passed the collection grew. Many of the faces were characters he has always drawn, others from tribal designs, and some inspired by a display of ancient Mexican ceramic heads at Auckland Museum. John too was inspired by the Mexican heads at the Museum, and after seeing Jago’s work at the Kumeu Arts Centre exhibition we decided to have a “clay date” at Print Art for our next Creative Jam session.
It’s going to be a fun evening getting to meet other artists while each creating a small figurine from clay. The clay will be air dried and then displayed as a collection at Print Art while we collect up other Creative Jam collaborative works. When we have a few items in the Creative Jam collection, each collaboration will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to charity.
So come and do your thing even if you have never worked with clay before. All for a good cause and a great evening meeting other artists.
Remember to register for next week’s Creative Jam as we need to know numbers to work out how much clay we will need.
